LEXINGTON, Ky. – The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) released its 36th annual All-America teams for NCAA Division III women's volleyball and for the seventh time in program history a Gallaudet University student-athlete was recognized. Junior outside hitter Darriyan Thomas (Vallejo, Calif.) was one of 98 named to the 2016 AVCA All-America honorable mention list.
The AVCA named 14 players from across the nation to each of its three teams (First, Second, Third) as well as recognizing the other All-Region first team selections on its honorable mention list.
Thomas is ranked seventh in NCAA Division III for service aces (75), 14th in total attacks (1,366), 20th in kills (462), 41st in points per set (4.41), 55th in attacks per set (10.93), 57th in aces per set (0.6) and 58th in kills per set (3.7). She has helped Gallaudet get ranked sixth in the nation for service aces (333) and 22nd in aces per set (2.64). She leads the NEAC in kills (462), matches (37), sets (125), total attacks (1,366), points (551) and matches started (37). She is second in kills per set (3.70), points per set (4.4) and third in service aces (75).
The honorable mention honor comes on the heels of other honors that Thomas has received during the season. In addition to being recognized as the 2016 NEAC Player of the Year and being the named to the All-NEAC first team for a second straight year she was named the NEAC Women's Volleyball Player of the Week three times (Sept. 19, Sept. 26, Oct. 17). Thomas also received AVCA Division III All-Region first team honors for the Northeast Region late last week.
Thomas is the sixth Bison to earn AVCA All-America Honorable Mention honors while Tamara Foronda is the lone Bison to be selected to an AVCA All-America team when she landed on the third team in 2006.
The AVCA has been presenting Division III All-America teams since 1981.
