Bison upended by Blazers on the road

FREDERICK, Md. - The Gallaudet University women's volleyball lost a non-conference match to Hood College, 3-2, here Friday evening at the BB&T Arena. The Bison (11-11) were stunned by the Blazers (5-15), who beat GU for the first time in the series history dating back to 1992.

GU jumped out and won the first set 25-21 but dropped the second set 20-25. The Bison led 16-10 in the third set but Hood came back to tie the set at 22. GU won three of the next four points to win the third set, 25-23. Hood bounced back in the fourth set and won 19-25 over GU to force a fifth and deciding set. In the fifth set, the teams battled back and forth. GU tied the set at 10-10 on an attack error by Hood. The Blazers scored five of the next six points to win 11-15. 

Gallaudet played without one of its two setters in the match. Sophomore outside hitter Adele Daniels (Austin, Texas) had to transition over to setter where she finished with 43 assists, eight digs and three service aces. Senior outside hitter Darriyan Thomas (Vallejo, Calif.) led the team with 17 kills, seven digs, four aces and three block assists. Freshman Karita Lewis (Frederick, Md.) was second on the team with 12 kills and nine digs while junior Shua Clay (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) had a career best 10 kills and six block assists.

Hood's Elena Zinaich led the Blazers with 17 kills, 10 digs, four aces and three block assists in the win.

Gallaudet will return home and host The Catholic University of America on Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. in a non-conference match.
