Bison hang tough with Stevenson in home match

WASHINGTON - Gallaudet University women's volleyball ran into a hot Stevenson University squad, who has won 16 of its past 17 matches, on Wednesday night in the Field House as the visiting Mustangs swept the Bison in straight sets (25-18, 25-18, 25-20).

Gallaudet (7-9) held the lead for most of the third set before Stevenson (16-1) scored five straight points to take an 18-16 lead. GU knotted the set at 20-20 on a bad set by Stevenson. The Mustangs responded with five straight points thanks to two service aces and a pair of kills from Annika Schwartz (10 kills).

The Bison struggled on offense as it only hit .089 percent as a team and committed 23 attack errors and 11 service errors. Sophomore outside hitter Adele Daniels (Austin, Texas) led the team with nine kills and 10 digs. Senior outside hitter Darriyan Thomas (Vallejo, Calif.) added eight kills, four digs and two service aces.

Prior to the start of the match Gallaudet Athletic DirectorMichael Weinstock presented a commemorative volleyball to Head Coach Lynn Ray Boren for winning his 300th career win at GU last Saturday.


  • Senior setter Jasmine Jeter (Noblesville, Ind.) passed out 21 assists
  • Junior libero Raelyn Fuechtmann (South St. Paul, Minn.) had a team best 13 digs
  • Freshman setter Kameron Kinast (Austin, Texas) passed out seven assists
  • Freshman outside hitter Karita Lewis (Frederick, Md.) recorded seven kills

Gallaudet now turns its attention to the 11th annual Worthington Classic being held in the Field House this Friday and Saturday. The two-day tournament will feature seven teams and 14 matches on two courts. Play begins on Friday, Sept. 29, at 2 p.m. The Bison are set to face Neumann University (2 p.m.) and Nichols College (8 p.m.) on Friday.
