Gallaudet picks up two wins on first day of Worthington Classic

WASHINGTON - Three of the seven teams competing in the 11th annual Worthington Classic left the Field House Friday night with a perfect 2-0 record. Gallaudet University's women's volleyball team is one of the three undefeated teams in the classic hosted by GU after the first of two days.

Gallaudet defeated Neumann University in four sets as they won 23-25, 27-25, 25-18, 25-19. The Bison dropped the first set but turned things around with a big 27-25 win in the second set. The Bison were woke and finished off the Knights in the third and fourth sets. Bison senior outside hitter Darriyan Thomas (Vallejo, Calif.) led the match with 23 kills and 16 digs for a double-double. Sophomore outside hitter Adele Daniels (Austin, Texas) added 19 kills and 21 digs. Senior setter Jasmine Jeter (Noblesville, Ind.) passed out a season best 55 asists while junior libero Raelyn Fuechtmann (South St. Paul, Minn.) made 23 digs.

For Gallaudet's second match on the day, it was a battle of Bison. GU went up against Nichols College from Massachusetts, both teams' nicknames are Bison. GU won the match in straight sets, 25-18, 25-12, 25-15. Daniels led the team with 10 kills while freshmen Karita Lewis (Frederick, Md.) and Elina Rubinshteyn (Austin, Texas) added nine and eight kills, respectively.

The other undefeated teams in the Worthington Classic after the first day include Kean University (14-4) and Rochester Institute of Technology (11-6).

Gallaudet will face Kean University (14-4) on the second day of the Worthington Classic tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 30) at noon in the Field House. Both teams were 2-0 so far in the tournament. GU will close out the tournament with a 4 p.m. match against Montclair State University (7-7) at 4 p.m.
