WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University women's volleyball team defeated Notre Dame of Maryland University, 3-1, in a non-conference match here Thursday night before a raucous and spirited crowd in the Field House.

The match was originally scheduled for earlier this week on Tuesday, but was postponed due to a slippery court in Baltimore.

Gallaudet (4-7) and NDMU (10-2) were closely matched as each set was fairly tight throughout the duration of the match. The Bison took the first set 25-19 but fell behind early in the second set and couldn't recover as the Gators bit back and won 16-25 to tie the match. The Bison refocused but continued to allow the Gators to linger around before GU put them away in the third set, 25-17, and fourth set, 25-21.

Junior outside hitter Adele Daniels (Austin, Texas) along with sophomore middle hitter Karita Lewis (Frederick, Md.) tallied double-doubles. Daniels made 10 kills and 14 digs while Lewis recorded a game-high 14 kills, 16 digs and two blocks. Junior outside hitter Tessa Lewis (Frederick, Md.) brought the energy and threw down 10 kills and made one block solo. Freshman setter Emma Giuntoli (Austin, Texas) passed out 36 assists.

The Gators were led by Sarah Sweet's double-double (13 kills, 16 digs), Ricelle Taganas' 16 assists and Mary Marquez's 19 digs.

  • The two teams had seven aces each
  • Senior Raelyn Fuechtmann (South St. Paul, Minn.) made 14 digs and three aces
  • Daniels added three service aces
  • Sophomore outsider hitter Brynn Schmidt (Bozeman, Mont.) added four kills and two blocks

Gallaudet will travel to New York this weekend and take on SUNY Poly (4-9, 2-0 NEAC) and SUNY Cobleskill (1-8, 0-2 NEAC) on Saturday, Sept. 22, at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
