YORK, Pa. - It was a tough draw for the Gallaudet University women's volleyball team here Friday evening on the first day of the Spartan Invitational hosted by York (Pa.) College. The Bison had the stern test to go up against New York University and nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins University. GU got swept in straight sets against the two non-conference foes in Wolf Gymnasium.
Gallaudet (2-5) lost 10-25, 16-25, 22-25 to NYU (3-2) before No. 16 Johns Hopkins (3-0) defeated the Bison 4-25, 18-25, 22-25.
Junior outside hitter Adele Daniels (Austin, Texas) led the Bison against NYU with seven kills and six digs. Sophomore middle hitter Karita Lewis (Frederick, Md.) added six kills and three blocks. Senior middle hitter Shua Clay (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) led the Bison upfront with three blocks (one solo) and four kills.
In the second match, Johns Hopkins served up 15 aces against the Bison. GU struggled in the first set as it didn't record one kill in 10 attempts as the Blue Jays won 4-25. Gallaudet played two close sets the rest of the way behind Daniels' nine kills and six digs. Freshman setter Emma Giuntoli (Austin, Texas) passed out 14 assists.

GU will shake things off and face Elizabethtown College (1-5) and Haverford College (1-4) tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 8) at noon and 2 p.m., respectively, on the second day of the invitational.
