GU begins season at Battlefield Classic

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The 2019 women's volleyball season got underway here Friday on the first day of the Battlefield Classic hosted by Gettysburg College. Gallaudet University got swept by Messiah College and McDaniel College.

Gallaudet (0-2) dropped the season opener to Messiah, 15-25, 13-25, 19-25. Junior Elina Rubinshteyn (Austin, Texas) led the Bison with seven kills and three digs while senior Adele Daniels (Austin, Texas) passed out 11 assists and made eight digs, two blocks.

In the nightcap, GU lost to McDaniel (20-25, 15-25, 17-25). GU had a negative team hitting percentage as the Bison only recorded 13 kills against the Green Terror. Daniels added 13 digs and seven assists. Freshman Sunita Schmidjorg (Austin, Texas) had two service aces in the loss.

The Falcons (2-0) defeated the Green Terror (1-1) in the first match on Court 3 on Friday afternoon in straight sets.

GU will go up against Elizabethtown College (1-1) and Dickinson College (2-0) tomorrow (Saturday, Aug. 31) at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively, on the second day of the Battlefield Classic.
