TOWSON, Md. - The Gallaudet University women's volleyball team were tricked by Goucher College here Wednesday night as the Bison lost, 3-0, at the Decker Sports and Recreation Center (SRC). The straight-set sweep; 22-25, 23-25, 19-25, was a sweet treat for Goucher on it's Sipke or Treat Night at the SRC. The Gophers celebrated Halloween with a costume contest and candy thrown into the crowd for each spike scored by the home team.
Gallaudet (11-22) trailed for the majority of the first set and lost 22-25. In the second set, Gallaudet took a 23-21 lead but didn't score another point as the Gophers scored four consecutive points for the 23-25 win. The Gophers rolled in the third set, 19-25.
Junior outside hitter Karita Lewis (Frederick, Md.) led the way with 16 kills. Freshman setter Demi Bingham (Jefferson, Md.) passed out 22 assists and sophomore Mia Upchurch (Austin, Texas) made 18 digs.
Goucher (12-12) freshman Rachel Chapman led the Gophers with 11 of the team's 38 kills.
- This is the first time Gallaudet has lost to Goucher in decades
- GU had won seven straight against the Gophers since 2010
- Six of seven wins by GU vs. Goucher had been in straight sets
- This is the 12th time, this year, Gallaudet has lost a match in straight sets
Gallaudet (7-3 NEAC) will close out the regular-season schedule on the road this Saturday, Nov. 2, at Penn St.-Berks (14-14, 6-4 NEAC) in a key North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) game at 5 p.m.
