Bison start season at Sea Gull Opener

SALISBURY, Md. – The 2010 women’s cross country season got underway for Gallaudet University on a picturesque Saturday morning at Winter Place Park in Salisbury, Md., as three Bison runners finished the Sea Gull Opener.

Freshman Radoslava Slavova (Scranton, Pa.) was the first Bison runner to finish the 5,920 meter course with a time of 30:40 to place 103rd out of 118 runners. Sophomores Amy Bachtel (Columbus, Ohio) and Katelyn Jurney (Tulsa, Okla.) were the two other runners to finish for Gallaudet. Bachtel placed 116th as she crossed the finish line in 35 minutes flat. Jurney was next to finish in 117th place with a time of 37:28.

Loyola University of Maryland won the race with 32 team points followed by Rowan University (63 points) and Slippery Rock University (104 points). A school needs five runners to complete the race to earn team points and a place in the final standings. Slippery Rock’s Crystal Burnick won the race with a time of 21:30.

Gallaudet will next travel to Cobleskill, N.Y., to run in the SUNY Cobleskill Fighting Tigers Invitational on September 11. The meet will represent Gallaudet’s first appearance in the North Eastern Athletic Conference.
